Lion Cuts for Cats: What to Know Before You Book

If you've ever seen a cat with a short, sleek body, a fluffy mane, and a little pom-pom on the tail, you've seen a lion cut. It's one of the most requested cat grooming styles, and it can be a practical choice for some cats. Here's what a lion cut is, who tends to ask for one, and how it works when you book mobile cat grooming with us in Las Vegas.
What is a lion cut?
A lion cut is a style where the coat on the body is trimmed short and the hair around the head and neck is left fuller, like a mane. Usually the lower legs and the tip of the tail are left fluffy too. It's sometimes grouped with a full shave-down, where the coat is taken short all over.
It's a style choice, not a requirement. Plenty of cats do perfectly well with a bath, a thorough brush-out and a tidy-up instead.
Why cat owners ask for a lion cut
Owners usually tell us one of these reasons:
- Long or thick coats that are hard to keep up with. Some long-haired cats tangle easily, and a shorter body coat is simply easier to manage at home.
- Matting. When a coat has tangled close to the skin, brushing it out can be uncomfortable for the cat. A shorter cut can be a gentler option. Your groomer will look at the coat and talk it through with you.
- Less hair around the house. A shorter coat can mean less hair on the furniture.
- Easier cleanup. Older or less flexible cats sometimes have trouble keeping their back end clean, and a trim helps.
If your cat has skin irritation, sores, or any health concern, please ask your vet before booking a cut.
Is a lion cut right for your cat?
Every cat is different. Some cats are relaxed on the grooming table; others have strong opinions. Things your groomer will consider with you:
- Coat condition. Heavy matting changes how the groom is done.
- Temperament. We go at your cat's pace and take breaks when needed.
- Your goals. Easier upkeep, a matting reset, or just a look you love.
The final style is decided in person with your groomer, so we can see your cat's coat and comfort level before we start.

Why mobile grooming is easier on many cats
A lot of cats don't love car rides, carriers, or the sounds and smells of other animals. With mobile grooming, we bring the grooming to your driveway. Your cat goes a few steps from your door into our van and gets one-on-one attention, with no waiting room, no other pets, and no long drive home.
You can learn more on our cat grooming page. We're open 7 AM to 10 PM daily (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas), which makes it easier to pick a calm time of day for your cat.
How to prepare for your cat's appointment
- Keep your cat indoors the day of the appointment so they're easy to find.
- The groomer picks your cat up at the door, or you can bring your cat to the van. Someone must be home.
- Have the carrier ready in case you'd like to bring your cat out to the van that way.
- A rabies vaccine is the only requirement.
- Tell us about any sensitive spots or past grooming experiences, good or bad.
- Mention any health notes your vet has shared with you.
After the lion cut
A freshly cut coat is low maintenance, but a little care helps:
- Give your cat a quiet space to settle in after the visit.
- Keep up with gentle brushing on the longer mane and tail areas.
- Rebook before the coat grows long enough to tangle again. Ask your groomer what timing makes sense for your cat.
